I would have enjoyed cycling in the mountains heading northwest out of Kyoto but I need to renew my passport in Osaka, so I followed the Katsuragawa river to the city center.
It would have been a good ride all the way there if it wasn't for the stupid bicycle gate things; these seldom used roads are restricted to just pedestrians and cyclists but the bikes that go through the gates do not have panniers attached. This resulted in me having to physically lift my bicycle in two stages over the gate - this proved to be frustratingly painful due to me having a cracked rib.
So the plan was to just go to the Australian consulate and hand over all the information, photos and money necessary for them to process my new passport that would be available in two weeks. This was exactly what I needed to do but with one major flaw... I needed to make an appointment. Damn it!
So now I have an appointment organized for Tuesday as Monday is a public holiday.... 3 days to kill in the area, I simply asked the woman I was dealing with at the consulate which direction should I head and she suggested south.
I'm currently heading east but only because I needed to get out of the metropolitan area so hat I could camp for the night. Tomorrow I will go further south, over the mountains.
I did find an ideal place to camp for the evening with a great panoramic view of Osaka lit up at night, certainly worthwhile climbing near vertical road to get here.
