I had a day of rest when staying with Jacquelyn and Robert, they had a wonderful place to unwind and rest my cracked rib. It's a painful experience to lift things along with laughing, sneezing and coughing but nothing can be done, just got to wait for it to heal; 4-6 weeks apparently.
Leaving the comfort of their place after a hearty breakfast I headed straight for Lake Biwa, here there was a great cycle track following the lake shore with some of those ridiculous fat cyclists with road bicycles worth thousands of dollars covered head to toe with Lycra with the only skin showing below the neck was their gut.
Leaving the great cycle path around the lake I relied on my GPS to get over to Kyoto using the most direct route. Obviously this was a mistake where it was soon taking me to a staircase up the mountain and then to a shitty abandoned road, I didn't want to cause more injury to myself with a chance that I could get stuck so tiring around was a better option finding a better road to Kyoto.
The road was steep with little to no shoulder but traffic was gentle, it being difficult to take deep breathes made climbing quite hard but I managed it, my biggest complaint about this Hwy 30 was that the downhill run was ruined by slightly elevated road humps that shook me and my bike apart.
Arriving in Kyoto earlier than anticipated I had to wait for a few hours until I could meet an old friend from Iceland, Yusuke. He was recently in a bicycle accident involving a car door and his face where 4 stitches were used to sew up his face. With me unable to laugh and him unable to smile it made for an interesting dinner and a few beers.
Here I met a man, Peter, in his mid-forties from Canada who seemed to be having a midlife crisis. Apparently a renown character in Japan, Peters drunken state talked much about getting a dog to protect his wife as she was apparently incapable to defend herself. In Japan, one of the safest countries on earth, nobody here need to be protected. Well, anyway, after Peter shed a few tears of an unsure emotion he offered me the equivalent of $200, i am unsure why but he wanted me to do something exciting with the money and keep enjoying my life.
It seemed to me he was broken and simply needed someone to talk to, I was willing to lend an ear regardless of the money but, hey, $200 sure why not. I'll take it.
