It was cold last night, really cold, to a point where I thought it necessary to use my emergency blanket that I keep for.. well... emergencies.
It certainly got below zero as my water bottles froze as did I.
It wasn't a good start to the day, I felt ill rested and sluggish but as the sun rose and evaporated the condensation on my tent and heated my core I set off into this near abandoned area of Japan.
It's a beautiful area of the country with rivers flowing in all directions, high mountains that are slowing turning oranges and reds as autumn creeps in and waterfalls at every turn. It's a nice place to be but you wouldn't want to stick around as each and every community I passed I only saw the elderly, perhaps this is where they come (or sent) to die but at no point in my ride to Hagi did I see a single person who wasn't aided by a scooter or at least a cane.
It was a very slow moving day as I was held back by the forceful head wind coming in from the west, frustratingly I was only just able to make it to Hagi as at several points throughout the day I was keen to give up.
Hopefully tomorrow will be more enjoyable.
