16km today… haha
I cycled only 16km today and perhaps got only 10km from Bern. This was the result of having a major issue with my bicycle. I don't really look after it, I don't clean it, I rarely oil the chain and the rear break hasn't worked in... I don't think I have ever had it working on this trip.
Due of my lack of care, it finally broke down today, the chain would not grab when climbing up and over a bridge throwing me to the ground. Perhaps my bike did this to me on purpose?
Asking for directions to the nearest bike shop I was able to cycle on the highest gear with a horrible crunching sound every few rotations of the peddles, drifting into the shop just as the chain slipped off.
I have been to many bike shops over the years but none even come close to the service and amenities of this store, perhaps because I cycle around the world this shop would seem more appealing to me, but they offered free coffee, tv, a couch and Internet while they service tour bike in the very organized workshop downstairs.
I could have spent hundreds of francs here but I'm trying to stick to a strict budget so I only bought the necessary parts to repair my bike. These parts came to 101CHF, quite expensive but I am in Switzerland, and what isn't expensive?!
This bike shop even had a repair station where you could do the repair yourself but the manager of the store wanted to help me out and got Benny the bike mechanic to do the repair for free. Benny pointed out that there was more wrong with my bike than first anticipated. Other parts needed to be replaced but like I said before I am on a budget.. So longas my bike is cycle-able.
On top of repairing my bike for free they through in some specialty chain oil for my trip in exchange of taking a few photos of me.
